A Great Way to Preserve Family Memories
We all have probably seen the series "Hoarders." I find the show to be somewhat stressful because I am a very neat person. Even though I am neat I do have items that are special to me. I had a nice entertainment center that had a lite curio cabinet on each side. I would put different collectibles in the cabinet and enjoyed being able to see them and not have them boxed up.
My husband would comment at different times that he would like a bigger TV and the size he wanted wouldn't fit in the entertainment
center. Last year was his 75th birthday and I decided to buy him the larger TV he wanted and I gave the entertainment center along with the curio cabinets to Habitat for Humanity.
One day my millennial age grandson was over and I mentioned how I missed seeing my items in my curio cabinet as many of them have memories attached to them. My grandson looked at me real strange and said, "Memaw, I don't get it! Do you know where I keep my good memories?" He then pointed to his head and heart. I really had to ponder that for quite a while. I do agree that we don't need lots of stuff but I have to admit I am not where my grandson is when it comes to things.
I love to scrapbook and do a lot of journaling as I hope my children and grandchildren will appreciate the family history in these scrapbooks. I recently finished one with three generations. I remembered that I had some framed count cross stitch samplers and decided to take them out of the frame and put the samplers in the scrapbook as that may be the only way that handiwork will be preserved. I knew if they were just in the frame or in a box the day would come that the next generation would throw them away. I believe they will save the family scrapbooks but not much else.
These cross stitch samplers will now be in my parent's scrapbook! I also had a picture of my mother's salt & pepper collection that the next generation can see!
