If Not Now Then When?

A place for everything and everything in its place - quote via www.organisemyhouse.com

I have wanted to clean out my clothes closets for some time and recently read an article that said most Americans only wear 20% of the clothes in their closet.  I wasn't sure I believed that so I began to observe how many clothes in my closet I really wear.  It didn't take long to see that I usually wore the same clothes over and over.  So I made a decision and said to myself, "if not now then when?" and began the task of taking clothes out of two walk-in closets.  I decided it was time to bless someone else with the clothes I rarely wore and not let them collect dust in my closet.

My husband had several suits and sport jackets, as well as, several pairs of dress slacks.  The dress code in the ministry where we work has become more casual, so he usually only wears suits on Sunday and at funerals or weddings.  After deciding a couple suits and dress slacks were enough, we chose to give the rest away.

When it came to my clothes, I had such a wide variety of things that I also was no longer wearing and decided to add them to the growing stack of clothes.  Before long I had added purses and shoes to the stack.  When I was done, we had over 100 pieces of nice clothing that we were able to bless others with!

It is wonderful to see fewer clothes on the racks; but more than anything, I am glad someone who has been wanting a nice suit or women's outfit would be able to be the recipients of those clothes.
I believe that just as I cleaned out clothes closets I also need to look at my entire life and see what else I need to deal with and not let procrastination have any place in my life.  There are other projects, dreams, and visions that I have, and I want to have that same "if not now then when" attitude towards each of those things.

What it means to procrastinate:
  • to postpone or delay needlessly.
  • the act of procrastination is putting off or delaying or deferring an action to a later time.
  • to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done.
The next project that I have put off is sorting through papers in two file cabinets.  I have thought about doing it the last two winters but this winter it is going to happen.  I am setting out my paper shredder as a reminder and I am putting a sticker on the cabinets that say, "if not now then when."

Would you like to join me in having an "if not now then when" campaign and begin to tackle those not-so-fun but necessary projects?  In future blogs, I will tell you what else in my home, and life gets one of those stickers!

Until next time, remember "Most of Life is Everyday!"
